What is Asthma?
Asthma is a common lung condition that causes occasional breathing difficulties.
It affects people of all ages and often starts in childhood, although it can also develop for the first time in adults.
There’s currently no cure, but there are simple treatments that can help keep the symptoms under control so it doesn’t have a big impact on your life.
Symptoms
The main symptoms of asthma are:
● Wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing) ● Breathlessness ● A tight chest, which may feel like a band is tightening around it ● Coughing
The symptoms can sometimes get temporarily worse. This is known as an asthma attack.
Several conditions can cause similar symptoms, so it’s important to get a proper diagnosis and correct treatment.
Your GP will usually be able to diagnose asthma by asking about symptoms and carrying out some simple tests.
Treatments
The main types are:
● Reliever inhalers – used when needed to quickly relieve asthma symptoms (salbutamol) ● Preventer inhalers (steroid) – used every day to prevent asthma symptoms occurring ● Some people also need to take tablets.
Causes and triggers
Asthma is caused by swelling (inflammation) of the breathing tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. This makes the tubes highly sensitive, so they temporarily narrow.
It may occur randomly or after exposure to a trigger. Common asthma triggers include:
● Allergies – to house dust mites, animal fur or pollen, for example ● Smoke, pollution and cold air ● Exercise ● Infections like colds or flu ● Identifying and avoiding your asthma triggers can help you keep your symptoms under control

This is usually harmless, and usually stops after you have used the medicine for a while. You may feel your heartbeat is uneven or it gives an extra beat, these may affect up to 1 in 10 people.

If you are near underactive, have low level or been exposed to trigger, you may feel your heart is beating faster or stronger than usual (palpitations). You may feel your heartbeat is irregular or it gives an extra beat, these may affect up to 1 in 10 people.
If you have not been 'underactive', talk to your doctor these may be more likely to be the causes of your asthma and if you have diabetes, the condition may affect your health. You may also have risk factors like use of the thyroid or a family history of asthma.
Ventolin inhaler, also known as, is a widely used inhaler that contains two different versions of the drug salbutamol. Each version is used to relieve symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It belongs to a class of drugs known as bronchodilators. Ventolin inhalers are also used for treating other respiratory conditions such as chest pain, which can lead to serious health problems and death. Inhaled salbutamol inhalers are also used to treat asthma, and can also be used to treat symptoms of a cold or flu. However, like any medication, Ventolin can cause unwanted side effects. The most common side effects of Ventolin inhalers include dry mouth, nausea, and chest pain. Inhaled salbutamol inhalers are most commonly used in people who are sensitive to beta-2-adrenergic receptors. These medications can cause severe reactions when they are used improperly or when they are accidentally inhaled. In rare cases, Ventolin inhalers can be fatal.

Chronic inhalers are a common, long-term treatment for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. They’re used by people who don’t get their asthma medication regularly. They’re used because they relieve symptoms, prevent asthma attacks, and control inflammation in the lungs, such as bronchospasm. The short-acting beta-2 agonist salbutamol (Ventolin) is used for short-term maintenance treatment of asthma symptoms, such as wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath. A long-acting beta-2 agonist (LABA) is used to treat asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or both.
Chronic inhalers are also used for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Some people with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have asthma attacks and bronchospasm. The length of time that a person can take a reliever inhaler is called a maintenance treatment. The length of time that a person can take an LABA for maintenance treatment is called a maintenance drug.
You can find out more about the effects of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) on the NICE web site.
Important:
A person’s asthma may become resistant to the use of inhaled corticosteroids. They’ll need a medication that can prevent their symptoms.
